Get in on the ground floor — plus other home business lies

Dear WAHFAQ, I’ve been looking into different Direct Sales companies to join because I really want to start my own business. I don’t quite have the money yet to get started, but people are pressuring me to sign up, saying I’m going to miss out because it’s a new company and they’re growing really quickly. And it seems to be true. I’ve seen their growth charts! What do you think? Should I just take the jump now, or should I wait a bit until I’m really ready to start a business? Who wouldn’t want to be ahead of a trend? Read More…

Why I hate MLM and Direct Sales

Dear WAHFAQ, How on earth can you sing the praises of MLM and Direct Sales companies? They’re nothing but scams! I have lost so much money with them it isn’t funny. What is wrong with you? How I love fan mail 🙂 It’s true that I love MLM and Direct Sales. Moreso the opportunity itself than any one particular business. But I do believe someone should evaluate an opportunity before signing up. There are many good aspects to the industry, but, there is a lot about it that I don’t like. So, let me give a bit of balance to Read More…

Reverse Marketing: Your way to millions

Dear WAHFAQ, What do you think is the quickest and easiest way to make money from a business? In the traditional business mentality, many times companies (or individuals) will create a product or service and then head out to find their customers. They spend way too much time and money trying to convince potential customers that their thingamajig is useful and needed and better than the competition’s thingamajig. Reverse Marketing, however, employs a much simpler approach: find a group of people who have a need, and then fill it. Yes, it seems like this concept would be in Business 101, Read More…

My mom makes me proud

My parents are of the mindset that people should rely on their jobs and companies to take care of them. My father was a newspaper editor for nearly 40 years and my mother is retired from being in the education field. They’ve always tolerated my whims, although, deep down I knew that they didn’t understand why I never got a “real” job. Residual income, cash flow…these whole concepts of making money without going to “work” never really clicked with them. I’m pleased to announce that Mom is finally coming around. I don’t know if it’s because she’s collecting residual income Read More…

Save cash and barter for your small business instead

Dear WAHFAQ, I’ve had a lot of hidden costs in starting my business. Things I didn’t even think to think about! Do you have any suggestions for keeping costs low while I get started? Before the time of MasterCard, Visa and Amex, people paid for things by cash or bartering. As a new business, bartering is a wonderful way to trade services and products for other, well, services and products. You’ll save your cash flow for bills instead of other necessities. I love trade. Don’t get me wrong, I do still much prefer earning money for my skills, but if someone Read More…

Why businesses fail

Dear WAHFAQ, I want to start a business, but I’m scared to death of failing. At this point in my life, I just don’t have the energy to start something without knowing for certain it will be a success. How can you tell if something will be successful or not? Time and time again, people with good intentions and great ideas fail at creating their own business. How many step back to analyze their failures, re-group and try again?  Success comes to those who are able to push through set-backs and learn from their mistakes. Before you start on your Read More…

Create multiple income streams from one idea

Dear WAHFAQ, I took your work at home class several years ago and I remember you speaking about all the different ways you made money with mystery shopping: as a shopper, consultant, author, instructor, etc. Can you remind me about how the rest of us can take our talents and diversify our income? Entrepreneurs are “idea fountains”, never lacking ideas for starting a brilliant new venture. But how many times have you sat down with ONE brilliant idea and found many ways of earning income from it? The point of this exercise is to take your passion and look at Read More…

You need to stop reading and start doing!

Dear WAHFAQ, I’ve been wanting to start my own business for several years, but I’m a bit overwhelmed at everything that needs to be done. I’ve taken a few entrepreneurship classes through my local college, and have been reading a lot of blogs online, not to mention going through a ton of podcasts, and I just feel like there is too much to know. I’m afraid of making a mistake, but I really want to do this! Many years ago, I was in an acting for film class held by a casting agency in Seattle. For introductions, we went around Read More…

Offline vs. Online Businesses

Dear WAHFAQ, I’m looking to start my own business, but I’m not sure if I should focus on something that’s just online, or if I should go for an in-person type of business, (like running a store.) What do you think? Before you decide to start your own business or follow an opportunity that has already been established, you’ll want to consider certain factors of the business: How much time you want to invest, how much money you can invest, the type of support system available to you, and the market to whom you want to pitch your wares. You Read More…

Plan your business before you begin

Dear WAHFAQ, I would like to be my own boss, but I’m having a hard time getting started. I feel like I have so many false-starts and so many different ideas that my friends and family are losing faith that I’ll actually succeed in just one. I know I can be successful, I’m just not sure HOW to do it. How do I get over this hump?   “Plan your work, and work your plan.” — One of my father’s gems…along with “Do your homework” and “Remember the Golden Rule” this phrase has stuck in my head over Read More…

Approach the media right with these quick pitch tips

Business owners should constantly be on the look out for new opportunities to get press for their business. Unfortunately, even some of the most seasoned public relations managers can fall flat when trying to submit a pitch to get publicity. Here are some quick tips to get you and your business noticed: Never pitch yourself. Pitch the issue that you are an expert on. Provide outside facts and stats. Never pitch your product. Pitch the problem your product solves. Writers want answers and solutions…not an infomercial. Give them the story. You can write an AP style story instead, framing yourself Read More…

The problem with sponsoring dreamers

Dear WAHFAQ, I am having the worst luck with my network marketing company. I love the products, and I have a steady stream of customers, but I’m having a hard time finding people to sponsor. The purpose of me doing this business in the first place is to create some residual income from other people’s sales…but most of them flake out! What can I do? In various businesses, I have encountered many people who say that they are committed, who say that they want to make a change in their lives, but never really follow through. These people amaze me, Read More…
